Memo for North Carolina School Officials

Communication to High School Principals

Subject: Summer Opportunity to Shape the Leaders of Tomorrow | Tar Heel Boys State

Body: High School Principals –

I’m reaching out to make you aware of a transformational opportunity for rising high school seniors to not only expand their knowledge of our government, but to learn leadership by doing and develop lifelong friendships along the way. The American Legion Tar Heel Boys State is a summer civic education program that was created to supplement the information taught in high school civics classes and provide an experiential opportunity for the leaders of tomorrow.

This memo is best utilized by those faculty and staff who oversee programs and classes where your school’s student body leaders most often emerge. In particular, we’d recommend sharing this memo with the following points of contact within high schools in your school system:

  • Athletics – Athletic Director and Varsity Coaches

  • Community Involvement – Community Service Hour Coordinators

  • Counseling – Rising High School Senior Counselor(s)

  • Debate Club – Faculty Sponsor

  • JROTC – Faculty Sponsor

  • Student Council – Faculty Sponsor

If you are from one of the many schools across our great state that already send young men to our program, we thank you. However, if your school is not yet sending delegates and you would like to learn more, we invite you to please visit tarheelboysstate.org to learn more.

For further questions about the program or nomination process, please contact Dustin B. Pittman, Program Director for Tar Heel Boys State, at director@tarheelboysstate.org
