American Legion

The American Legion is the largest veterans organization in the world, with a membership of over three million members in the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and seven foreign countries.

The first session of what is now American Legion Boys State was held at the fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois in 1935. North Carolina was the eighth American Legion Department to sponsor a Boys State program, the first session being held in 1938.
